Timeless Bathroom Design, Rooted in Place
On California’s Central Coast, softened light, tonal hills, and the meeting of land and sea offer a rich source of design inspiration. For Michelle Pelech, owner and principal designer of Michelle Pelech Interiors, that sense of place informs an approach to timeless bathroom design that is intuitive, grounded, and enduring.
“Design is intuition for me,” she says. “I wish I had a printer connected to my brain because I can see a space exactly the way it should be. I love figuring the best use for a space, balancing form, color and mood while also being delightfully unpredictable.”
From her studio in Arroyo Grande, just miles from Native Trails’ headquarters in San Luis Obispo, Michelle has cultivated an aesthetic she describes as “elevated earthy.” Bathrooms that feel refined yet welcoming. Sophisticated yet entirely livable.
Central Coast Color, Grounded in Livability

Michelle says her clients want livability first.
“Here on the Central Coast, people don’t want to have to take their shoes off. They want everything in their home to be usable, comfortable and relaxed, but still elevated and impressive.”
That balance defines her approach to timeless bathroom design. Rather than chasing a look, Michelle draws directly from the landscape surrounding her — the softened tones of rolling hills, the movement of water, and the warmth of sunlit wood.
“We choose relaxed, comfortable, lighter colors — colors from the hills, colors from the water — and lighter woods, primarily.”
From there, the palette becomes more tactile than thematic. Michelle layers bisque tones, marbles with peachy veining, woven cane, rope details and natural stone to create bathrooms that feel grounded and quietly dimensional.
“The more natural materials you can use in a bathroom, the better.”
Elevated Earthy

For Michelle, timeless bathroom design is less about trend cycles and more about permanence — materials that age beautifully, palettes that feel drawn from nature, and pieces crafted with intention.
Natural textures add depth. Honest materials bring warmth. Craftsmanship ensures longevity.
These elements come together to create bathrooms that feel calm and balanced — spaces that support everyday living while still delivering moments of beauty.
The Defining Piece: Why Artisan Sinks Matter

In many of Michelle’s projects, timeless bathroom design hinges on a single defining element — often an artisan-crafted sink.
In one recent powder room (shown above, here), she selected a Bliss 24k gold vessel sink from Native Trails’ Precious Metals Collection. The result was transformative.
“My client bit the bullet, bought it, installed it, and of course, it was fabulous.”
In a primary bath in Avila, Michelle used a pair of Classic sinks in Polished Nickel to provide optimal brilliance against charcoal walls and cabinetry. “We needed a bright, shiny object,” she says, “in that bathroom to show the contrast and be really effective. Anything else would have fallen flat.”
These pieces are not decorative afterthoughts. They become the focal point of the room — sculptural, tactile, and built with integrity.
“Spend the money on the cool, well-made piece,” Michelle advises. “You’re not going to regret it.”
That philosophy aligns naturally with Native Trails’ commitment to artisan craftsmanship — creating functional works of art designed to last for generations.
Intuition, Proportion, and the Confidence of Experience

Michelle now works alongside her daughter, Peyton Pelech, forming a creative partnership rooted in instinct and shared perspective.
“We do everything together. As it turns out, we’re a great duo.”
Both designers share an intuitive understanding of scale.
“Either of us can walk into a room and say, you need an 86-inch sofa over there. You need a 60-inch round table right there. Six chairs, but they can’t be wider than 22 inches each. We can just see.”
In bathrooms, that same instinct guides placement and balance — allowing handcrafted materials and sculptural fixtures to take center stage.
When asked what design rule she loves to break, Michelle answers simply:
“There are guidelines. There is scale and proportion. Beyond that, if it supports how you want to live, it belongs.”
Designing for Longevity

Across Michelle’s Central Coast projects, a common thread emerges: permanence.
Natural materials that age gracefully. Artisan finishes that develop character. Thoughtful details that remain relevant long after trends fade.
It’s a philosophy shared by Native Trails — creating pieces that honor time-tested craft traditions while enriching everyday living.
In Michelle Pelech’s hands, timeless bathroom design becomes exactly what she promises: practical beauty. Elevated. Earthy. And built to endure.
